A gallery and resource center for the study of African-American achievements, the Family Heritage House Museum’s mission is to inspire children to have a respect for their ancestors, a love for learning, and a passion for service. Further, to strengthen black families and empower them to maintain historical bonds of kinship; to assist in the promulgation of the culture for the benefit of the general population.
Since its inception in 1990, Family Heritage House Museum has shared an array of artifacts, literature, and other resources, chronicling the history and cultural achievements of African-Americans. In 2000, its founders loaned their abundant, diverse collection to Manatee Community College, now known as State College of Florida, Manatee/Sarasota, which assists with the museum’s site and facilities.
The National Park Service has evaluated the Family Heritage House Museum as making a significant contribution to the understanding of the Underground Railroad in American history and it meets the requirements for inclusion in the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
Museum hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and weekends and evenings by appointment.
